Substance Abuse Assessment and Treatment Providers In the Ontonagon/Bessemer, Michigan Area
I often get requests for Substance Abuse counselors in my cases. This is a listing of providers that are in the local Ontonagon and Gogebic County area in Michigan.
A Substance Abuse Assessment is required by statute prior to sentencing in an OWI criminal case. Typically private health insurance does not cover the cost of these assessments and most providers require payment in full before they will release the assessment to the court.
Ontonagon- (906) 337-0763- provides assessments and outpatient counseling
Bessemer – (906) 663-5141- provides assessments, outpatient counseling and alcohol highway safety education class. (Will go to Gogebic County jail for assessments.)
Public Counseling- Houghton (906) 214-7017)- provides assessments and counseling
Access Center (906) 228-9696- Must first call access center to arrange appointment at local office. Has residential treatment. Offices are located in Ironwood, Hancock, Iron Mountain, Iron River, Ishpeming, Marquette, Munising, Newberry, Sault Ste. Marie, Escanaba and St. Ignace.
They do not take Blue Care Network, Tri-Care or Champ Insurance. Medicaid typically covers 100% of costs of assessments. Block funding may be available for low income individuals.

Samaritan Counseling Services (906) 364-7270. Provides assessment, MIP program, outpatient counseling, domestic violence counseling, anger
management.

In addition, the judges will often recommend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings as a condition of probation.
